Hip Editorial Thinking

Written by Toshiyuki Sai

I have been working in the editorial field for a long time. Not only have I created magazines, but I have also used the ideas as leverage to get into all kinds of jobs. . some of them worked, some of them didn't. . . I have been able to enter places I would not have been able to enter without this work, and I have met people I would not have met without it. All of them were tremendously interesting and became my treasure. Play is work, and work is play. That's what editorial work is like. I will write about the fun and expansion of this job for those who are interested in it.

As I have already written, editorial thinking is one of the abilities that everyone uses.

No matter what kind of work you do, you will learn to do it in a certain way as you gain experience. What is important, however, is the organization of the ideas that lead to that way of thinking, and the source of those ideas.

I mentioned in the previous two articles that we should expand on an idea, organize it rationally, and test it for good and bad, but when considering the idea, it is very important to know whether it is good-looking or not.

If we compare it to cooking, the way of thinking is the method of preparation . The ingredients are the ideas. No matter how good a chef is, he cannot make good food with rotten ingredients.

If you start at the wrong place, you will not finish.

Sense is often thought of as a gift from heaven , but it is not. It can also be acquired. If you surround yourself with people who have good sense, you will naturally improve your judgment.

I said sense , but it could be a sense of value. . not a sensual aesthetic sense, but something more logical.

This is better than that one . The idea that because .

In this way, it can be called an acquired ability.

Whether or not this is helpful, let's talk about the editorial workflow and my idea of "cool values.

Of course, there are many different values in the world, so I cannot say that mine is the best. It is my personal preference. However, people who share my tastes will share my creations and writings. I can't say that I have been at the forefront of the industry, but I have been able to work in a reasonable position because of this.

What is hip?

Hottie, I wrote many times . For several years now, I have replaced that with the word "hip," starting with the March 2015 launch of HOUYHNHNM's magazine edition, HOUYHNHNM Unplugged, the magazine version of my own webzine, HOUYHNHNM's.

There are various cana adjectives to modify fads, customs, and cultural things. . stylish, cool, luxurious, artistic, etc. . The images evoked by these adjectives are rather orthodox. Hip contains these, and I guess you could call it a twisted sense of them.

In the 1990s, I went to Los Angeles by myself to edit a separate mook book for a certain magazine. I was guided by a coordinator who lived in the area to show me the areas of interest.

It's hip around here right now.

. whispered this here and there. Everywhere is still an area scattered with privately owned cafes, record stores, and boutiques, with few large-capital commercial businesses in the area. The exception is Starbucks .

Starbucks is very good at market research and sensitive to hip places."

The street is sparsely populated during the day, but in the evening, young people, mostly students, gather here. . It is such a place where the smell of marijuana seems to waft from somewhere.

In these hip areas, there are no global chain hotels. . boutique hotels, if any. The Portland boom began in a small town in a major U.S. city.

I have placed myself in these hip values since I was young. Rather than dressing up in luxury goods and staying in expensive hotels, I would wear my favorite jeans until they were worn out and drink natural wine at local restaurants. . I used to look at those who did the opposite with a rather dismissive eye.

Maybe this is how it was when I was younger because I didn't have the money. I want to drink Romanée-Conti but I can't. . In short, it's the howl of a loser.

Anyway, such values were acquired.

This is where I base my ideas. In other words, my favorite taste. Some of them are done, some of them are not, but here are some of them. Some of them were used as media materials for the first issue of Unplugged.

(Old values) (Hip values)
I have a lot of stuff - I prefer to have less stuff.
Have state-of-the-art products - Use old things with love and care
Ownership of brand-name products - Love of art
Buy a house by compulsion - Start living in two locations by renting.
Work hard for it. - Reduce working hours.
Have a seat at a restaurant where you can't get a reservation - Become a regular at a cozy local restaurant
I'm going for a night out. - I'm going for a morning walk with my dog.

Editorial thinking is the process of taking these ideas and beliefs and developing ideas from them. As long as there is a core, the context will continue, no matter what the branches and leaves may be.

This is my case, but you all have your own preferences and philosophies. From these values, you can build your own base of non-negotiables and verbalize them.

If you were to decide to go into business for yourself, you would need this to succeed. . because there is no sympathy for a business that does not know what it is trying to do.

. to obtain a sense of value.

Still, there may be many people who have not yet formed such values or are still fuzzy about them. No, if you are an adult, you already have values. They just lack confidence. Without confidence, you cannot speak up and you cannot persuade others. How can we develop our own sense of values, or self-confidence?

As I wrote above, it is not inborn. This is an acquired ability.

. see below for an example.

Let's get dressed up!
Let's get interested in art!
Let's go to the hottest restaurant.
Communicate with us!
Read the book.
Let's make people laugh
Open your big mouth and smile.
Let's have a sense of the market!
Don't think from scratch. Look for precedent.
Look Abroad!
Language skills
Have your own thoughts and beliefs.

I will write more about this in the next issue ,.
