New Era® is a headwear brand that has made a name for itself around the world. But did you know that New Era® also applies its creativity to the design of bags? While having a simple and modern look, New Era's bags are also very practical, and are now widely used by many people and can be seen on many street corners. Three creators inspected these "New Era" bags. How do they see the charm of these items? This four-week Series will be led by photographer Enka Sano, who is active in a variety of magazines and advertisements.

Enka Sano / Photographer

He began teaching himself photography at the age of 15. After working as an assistant, he became a freelance photographer in 2008, and was featured in the "STUDIO VOICE 100 JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPHERS" in 2010, and won the Grand Prix at the 61st Asahi Advertising Awards in 2013.

Not a day goes by that I don't see a New Era item when I walk down the street.

Mr. Sano, did you know that "New Era" was releasing bags?

Sano. I knew that. I actually have a New Era backpack. I love it because it is very easy to use.

What kind of image do you have of the New Era brand?

Sano. In the past, I had an image of strong ties with hip-hop. But now it is different. While it is related to music, it is also firmly established among the younger generation. It seems that not a day goes by when you walk down the street and don't see a New Era item. I think that is why the brand is loved by so many people.

Do you own any other items from "New Era" besides backpacks?

Sano. I have a lot of caps, including the one I'm wearing right now. I probably have about 40 caps at home. I wear them at least 6 times a week (laughs).

You wear hats very often, don't you?

Sano. I like street fashion. I think caps are the most accessible street item for girls. For example, if there is a pair of sneakers you want, they may only be available in men's sizes, but caps are not like that. . I like wearing caps because they are a good embodiment of what I like.

Both hands should always be free.

Please tell us about the bags you use on a daily basis.

Sano.: I tend to use a backpack , or a small bag such as a sacosh. . I don't use leather bags or totes like girls carry.

Why?

Sano. Basically, my clothes are always casual, and I like to be active on a daily basis, so it's easier for me to have both hands free. . I also use a kickboard to get around (laughs).

It's a boyish lifestyle, isn't it?

Sano. It's simply more fun. Skateboards are scary, but kickboards are still safe to ride, and you can take them on trains and buses.

So he said, "You have to have both hands free.

Sano. so I basically use a backpack most of the time. Also, I hear that shoulders and totes make posture worse. . I like backpacks for that reason as well. In that sense, I like backpacks.

The premise is simple design and pockets for small items.

What do you look for in a backpack?

Sano. I would like it to be large enough to hold a computer. Also, I usually carry a camera and lenses with me for location shooting, even on days when I am not shooting, so I would like to have enough space for those as well. . I like basic colors such as black and beige. I prefer simple designs as much as possible. Also, it is important to have a small pocket!

Small pockets?

Sano. I was thinking that it would be nice to have pockets for small items, like this backpack. . I often put my cosmetics in these places.

Don't you keep them all together in your makeup bag?

Sano. Of course I have a makeup pouch, but it's a hassle to take the pouch out of my bag and then take out the cosmetics I use from inside it (laughs). (laugh) . So, I try to put only the items that I use most often in a small pocket.

I see. So you would be happier if it had a number of functional pockets?

Sano. . it's not like that (laughs). If there are too many pockets, I won't be able to use them all this time, so I like to keep it to the bare minimum.

. I'd like to go out for a photo shoot with a New Era backpack on my back.

How do you like the New Era backpacks you have on hand?

SanoI thought, "This looks like a good fit for me! . The size is just right for my petite frame and the simple design is easy to match with my clothes. The size is just right for my petite frame, and the simple design is easy to match with my clothes. Also, I like the zip. The high-tech mood is cool.

What do you think about the functionality of the system?

Sano. I think this kind of standard shape is somehow the most useful. . It has a main compartment and a small pocket in the front. . And the long gusset is designed to hold a camera and lenses, which is great. I also like the small area of mesh on the back!

Mesh area?

Sano. Girls often wear knitwear or long, shaggy clothes. . When I wear such clothes and carry a backpack with a mesh back, my buttocks get fuzzy.

. is the part that is not fixed and shakes.

Sano: Yes, yes . But this backpack doesn't have mesh around the hips, right? . So it looks good to have less damage to the clothes. This point is often overlooked, but I think it is surprisingly important.

I see.

Sano: Also, it would be convenient to have a holder for my computer. . Once I step out of my house, I don't want to go home until nighttime (laughs). . So when I have free time, I sometimes work on my computer, so this is very helpful.

This backpack seems to fit Mr. Sano's lifestyle , doesn't it?

Sano. it's perfect. I wish I could use this for location shooting . . I carry a camera for work, but I also usually carry an instant camera and a compact camera. I can put a small camera in this drink holder, and it's nice to be able to take it out when I want to take a picture.

I see! That is an idea unique to you, Mr. Sano. .

SanoThe drink holder is designed to be deep enough so that you don't have to worry about dropping your camera. . I can also put a spare film in it. Many girls are carrying compact cameras these days, so I would recommend this to them as well (laughs).
