Arc'teryx Kobe Brand Store opened last month. This is the second flagship store in Japan following Harajuku, and the first brand store to have a small room dedicated to "Arc'teryx Veilance. We interview Ken Takagi, commercial manager of the store.

What is the small room for Arc'teryx Veilance?

Please tell us about your intention to open a new Arc'teryx brand store in Kobe.

tall tree:previousAs I mentioned, one of our goals at Arc'teryx is to open a brand store in every government ordinance city. The main reason we chose to open a store in this location was that we were able to find an excellent property in the Kobe Old Settlement district, a prime location and a typical modern architecture, the Chartered Building.

What are the features of your stores?

tall treeThe store will be one of the largest Arc'teryx brand stores in Japan, with a ceiling height of nearly 15 meters and a total floor space of approximately 80 tsubo. In addition to covering all categories from outdoor activities to lifestyle, the store has a small room for "Arc'teryx Veyrans," a first for a brand store.

Why did you set up a separate small room for "Arc'teryx Veyrans"?

tall treeArc'teryx has a wide range of categories, including "Essentials" for outdoor activities, "Endorphin" for running and trail running, and "Twenty Four" for lifestyle activities, but only "Arc'teryx Velance" is based on a completely different concept. The concept of "Arc'teryx Velance" is completely different from other products in the company's lineup.

You mean "the ultimate apparel for urban life.

tall treeThat's right. It is purely the culmination of Arc'teryx's technical capabilities. In fact, only a limited number of members are involved in the production of Arc'teryx Velance, and only skilled craftsmen are even allowed to be involved in its production. Because it is such a special category, we try not to put it on a par with other lines.

There is a reason for the high price point.

The price range is quite high for an outdoor brand product.

tall tree: but the prices are still comparable to fashion apparel. That is why it is gaining support from discerning fashion customers. It boasts the minimalistic and simple design characteristic of Arc'teryx, as well as unparalleled functionality, at this price point. The fact that we can clearly explain that there is a reason why they are expensive may be a major strength of the brand.

In fact, the digestion rate has been surprisingly high.

tall tree: More than 90% of the collections are currently being digested by proprietors. That is an unthinkable number for apparel. Supply and demand are not keeping up. However, we are currently in the process of increasing the capacity of our Canadian factory in our home country. Once that factory is in place, the supply will improve significantly, and I think we will be able to showcase Canadian craftsmanship in the future.

It is also unique that Jay Osgavy, a product designer, has been named as an ambassador for Arc'teryx Veyrans.

tall treeIn fact, we sign ambassador contracts with a variety of creators every year. If you pay attention to this aspect, I think you will understand what a special category Arc'teryx Veyrans is.

A new attempt as Arc'teryx in Kobe.

Returning to the Kobe store, an exhibition of photographs by Kenju Sato, a photographer known for his oddball legacy, was held at the same time as the store's opening. I thought this was an unexpected approach for Arc'teryx, which has a strong product-first impression.

tall treeAs we continue to grow the brand, we will certainly need to take a non-product approach. However, we believe that we should not just hold events in the dark, but rather carefully hold events that are linked to the worldview of the Arc'teryx brand. In that sense, I think it was a very meaningful experiment for the future of the brand to be able to express in this way the relationship with Mr. Sato that was established through the magazine "TRANSIT. In fact, it seems that Mr. Sato was also a fan of Arc'teryx.

The entrance of the building, which looks like a prestigious maison, is also impressive, with a completely different look during the day and at night.
