PROFILE

Shinji Moriyama
District United Arrows

Born in Nagasaki , Japan in 1968. He is a well-known sales person at the famous "District Unattached Arrows" store on Cat Street. He is also known as an unparalleled "Star Wars" enthusiast. . A self-proclaimed Jedi who is also a well-known member of HOUYHNHNM's blog.

I like them so much it's hard to narrow it down to just one.

. You have just launched a custom-made shirt service that incorporates the "Star Wars" pattern. Mr. Moriyama, I understand that you usually wear clothing from this movie.

Moriyama:What I wear clothes for is that I enjoy wearing them. Clothing is something you wear to make yourself feel good. Of course it is wonderful to say, "I like this brand" or "I like this designer." On the other hand, it is also fine to say, "I like Star Wars," as I do. I think it's nice to say "I like this brand" or "I like this designer. It's not visible, but wearing a "Star Wars" printed T-shirt under your shirt, for example. That alone changes your mood.

One piece worn on this day was the Admiral Ackbar all-over shirt.

Moriyama-san, did you first experience "Star Wars" in "A New Hope," which was released in 1978?

Moriyama:Yes, it was. It was released when I was in the 4th grade of elementary school , and it really hit me. Up until then, most of the films were about flying airships using Tegus. 2001: A Space Odyssey" was the only one that really pursued reality, but it was not enough for me as a child. That was one of the reasons why I was so fascinated with "Star Wars. Now I am an adult with the same feelings I had as an elementary school student (laughs).

You have always liked science fiction?

Moriyama:. I grew up watching Kamen Rider and Ultraman, so I had a good grounding. But "Star Wars" was not a children's trick. The story is based on myths from around the world, and the themes are universal and anyone can relate to them. Yet, it also incorporates a sense of excitement that tickles the hearts of children. The staff members who create these stories are geeks, so the deeper you dig, the more geeky parts of the stories come out. That is why we are able to attract so many different kinds of fans.

The spaceships and other objects that appeared in the film had been properly defaced, and at the time, some people were surprised by that.

Moriyama:It was groundbreaking. It was the first time for me to see a space ship that had been used for a long time. The design was unique and realistic because it was created by a group of people who love plastic models.

The characters are diverse, aren't they? Not only human beings, but also a wide variety of aliens.

Moriyama:. yes, it did. Maybe it was the film that changed my view of minorities.

Do you have a favorite character?

Moriyama:I am often asked that, but there are many characters I like even if they only appear in one scene (laughs). (Laughs.) I like so many characters that I can't choose just one. But I collect toys, and if I make a figurine of a human character, the reality of the character is diluted. So I tend to like characters wearing masks, droids, and creatures.

Moriyama's personal stormtrooper helmet.
. the inside has been properly compensated to fit the shape of one's head.

When the last movie was released, he wore the helmet above and went to see the movie with a group of fellow Star Wars lovers.

What kind of collectibles do you collect?

Moriyama:. Recently, I've become interested in props for filming that I saw as a child. Also, technology has advanced compared to the past, and modeling has become much more accurate. So I'm into making realistic plastic models.

How much do you have at home?

Moriyama:Only a portion of it is shown on the front page.

I see that there are some that you haven't released (laughs).

Mr. Moriyama's collection at his home. "At my age," he says, "my family told me to throw it away.
I get a lot of goodies from my friends," says Moriyama.

Moriyama:Of course I do (laughs). Just the other day, I was interviewed by another magazine. I built a shelf in my room and display plastic models and other items on it. My acquaintances call it a "kamidana. Some of the smaller items have become too small to be used as interior decorations, so I had to get rid of them.

For example, when I was in elementary school, bottled Coca-Cola was sold in a vending machine. At the time, there was a Star Wars graphic on the back of the crown. . As a child, I wanted to collect those, but I was in elementary school, so I didn't have any money. . So I would pick up the crowns that the adults had thrown away. But they would end up covered in rust. So I couldn't keep them forever.

So you are into plastic models these days.

Moriyama:Yes, I have. . recently I spent 3 years and 8 months building the great big Falcon.

Did it take that long?

Moriyama:. it was 'DeAgostini. So it took 2 years to gather all the parts, and 1 year and 8 months to paint it. It took me a lot of time looking at photo books of props from that time and trying to reproduce the stains that I saw here and there (laughs).
