Painter meets Twingo

A one-day tour of Tokyo with painter Joji Nakamura. A good distance from things you feel in the Twingo.

The French car brand RENAULT's Twingo is an attractive car with a compact size. The Twingo is a compact car with an appealing size that makes it easy to navigate the narrow alleys and lanes of Paris and enjoy driving comfortably. Tokyo, on the other hand, has a unique urban landscape with a complex intertwining of main roads and small streets. The coexistence of large buildings and short, old-fashioned houses is unique to Tokyo. We took a tour of this city with Joji Nakamura, a painter whose works are also exhibited in Paris, in the "Twingo". We spent a day sightseeing in Tokyo, visiting galleries and stores that Mr. Nakamura is familiar with and admiring his favorite views of Tokyo. The "Twingo" played a role in this tour.

Anyway, it is important to keep your hands on the wheel.

Nakamura, who makes his living painting artwork as a painter, is active in a wide variety of fields , including creating artwork for musicians' records and CDs, in addition to his own work.

Nakamura's work is abstract, yet vibrant and somehow organic. Nakamura says that he arrived at this style through a series of changes.

When I was a teenager, I liked punk music and collected flyers of various events while going to live music clubs. Many of the punk flyers were collages or illustrations, and I would make collages of my own after seeing them. I studied abroad in the U.S. when I was a student, and all of my roommates were art students, and I would participate in group exhibitions they held on my own (laughs).

After returning to Japan, he was more interested in becoming an artist than in finding a job, so he worked part-time while creating his own artwork. From that time on, he began to draw pictures instead of collages, and he brought his works to the editorial department of the legendary fashion magazine "DUNE," where he got to know various artists and skaters and began to exhibit together with them.

I started painting around that time, although my works then were completely different from those now. When I told Fumihiro Hayashi, the editor-in-chief of DUNE, that I wanted to become a painter, he told me, 'Painting is hard work. He said, "With photography, you can get your work published in magazines, but with painting, if you are motivated, you can see something after 10 years" (laughs). I wondered at the time if it would take that long, but in the end, I still continue to paint.

Nakamura began creating black-and-white paintings from line drawings drawn with a pen, and has since undergone various changes before arriving at his current style. I think I have finally figured out what makes me unique," he says.

I feel that my work is gradually evolving, but I always feel that there is something missing, that it should still be good enough. . So I continue to paint every day, looking for that missing ingredient. . Sometimes I paint while consciously trying to make changes. However, if I draw while thinking in my head, it often doesn't turn out well. So I think it is important to just keep moving my hands.
