Transcending time and space , face to face with Van Gogh.
. This year, you presented a collection in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum.
Morioka:Before the Corona disaster, the Tokyo Olympics were scheduled and the timing was almost a turning point for society. In contrast to this major trend, we were also looking at classic art on a regular basis, and fortunately we were introduced to the Van Gogh Museum. The collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum was born out of this, and the key point of consideration for the design was "What would Van Gogh do if he were alive today? I thought, "What would Van Gogh do if he were alive today?
How did you come up with the idea for Van Gogh's letter prints?
Morioka:After much thought, I came up with the idea of how to break down and reconstruct the framework of painting. . Then, I thought I could create a new expression by making a single print of Van Gogh's letter to Gauguin. . Although there were some difficulties, though, because the print of the total pattern would make the edition larger.
The exhibition hall also has a somewhat unusual atmosphere.
Morioka:I piled up grass instead of fixtures while imagining Van Gogh, and created a small museum in the countryside in the basement space of my apartment.
The building has an underground atmosphere combined with the sophistication of a museum. Did you calculate this in your design?
Morioka:. No, it is a space that I created very naturally and sensitively. I have always loved the live-action atmosphere that comes from DIY, and at the same time, I think the elegance that is inherent in the mode of Comme des Garcons and other fashion brands is wonderful. . Perhaps it is the multifaceted nature born from the accumulation of inputs up to the present day.
