Put a pin in a world that wants to put labels on it! The mysterious SKWAT, the other side of the story.

Put a pin in a world that wants to put labels on it!
The mysterious SKWAT, the other side of the story.

The first was as a place to sell art books for 1,000 yen each in a house that used to be a dry cleaning store in Harajuku; the second was as a limited-time cafe in the vacant space of "Cibone Aoyama" before it moved to a new location. . Currently, Twelve Books is located on the second floor of a commercial building in Aoyama, Lemaire is on the first floor, and a free space called "PARK" is in the basement. What exactly is this "SKWAT" that is not bound by location, size, or business type? We asked three people involved in this project, which can be seen as a counter to the "understandability" that pervades the world.

The relationship started out as a funny one , .

. First of all, let me ask you about your relationship with each other. This is the second time that you and Mr. Nakamura and Mr. Hamanaka have worked together after your time at "VACANT" in Harajuku, right? Then, what kind of relationship do you have with Mr. Makiguchi?

Makiguchi's drawings, which he says he drew, in order from left to right. The first one is based on a photograph, and the second one is copied with about 70% feeling, referring to his own work of the first one. He draws Corbusier, but it does not matter if he is famous or not.

Nakamura: In terms of his direct involvement with "SKWAT," the drawing that hangs in the middle of the stairs is his work. I have known him since 10 years ago when he was a graduate student at the University of the Arts, and he attended the opening event of "Bakanto," a space that Hamanaka, myself, and a few others were running at the time, as a photographer.

Makiguchi: No, I paid (laughs). . that was the very first event when "Bakant" was launched.

Nakamura: The event featured a doll-making performance by Jonio (Jun Takahashi) of "Undercover," a sound performance by Atsuhiro Ito using his self-made sound tool "Optron," and a beautiful performance by Fuyuki Yamakawa, who uses his own voice and body as a platform for expressive activities such as "khoomei. The performance was a special event with a crossover of genres.

Makiguchi: I made a reservation, paid for it, and waited for the main event of the day, the doll making by Jun Takahashi. When the show started, I wanted to see it right in front of me, so I took the initiative to go up to the second floor, but the band in front of Mr. Shield started the show. After the band finished, an announcement was made that the audience should go downstairs to prepare for the show, and everyone went downstairs, but I remained on the second floor. I remained on the second floor. I thought, "Oh no," but I happened to have my SLR camera with me at the time, and I quickly decided to pose as a member of the audience and record the event.

I thought about making a piece at the school using the material I took at that time, but on second thought, I thought, well, there's Mr. Shield in the picture, and it's not a piece of art. So, I don't know why, but I contacted "Bacant" . I asked them to put this in the "Bakanto" section. . It was Kay (Nakamura) who responded to my e-mail.

Nakamura: No, no, no. It wasn't an e-mail, it came out of the blue. He said, "I don't own this picture, you can keep it. I thought he was a strange guy, so I turned him down. That was our first encounter.

Did you think at the time that an interesting guy had arrived?

Nakamura: No, at the time, I really thought he was a funny guy (laughs). He would say, "I can't help it if I keep it, so please leave it there," or "I don't understand why, either . I don't know why, but I think that's the way it should be. Then, a little while later, he brought a work he had shot himself, and it was really good.

Mr. Makiguchi is a member of "SKWAT"....

Nakamura: He is not a member. SKWAT" is a concept, and the core members are Yoshiko (Edstrom), Hama, and myself. There are people around us who share the same ideology, and we occasionally do things together.

Makiguchi: I had only heard about it since last year .

Nakamura: He's one of the few people I go to when something comes up and say, "Hey, I'm thinking about this, what do you think?" . He is one of the few people I ask when I have something on my mind. He is so honest that it's really scary. He says things like, "Be careful, you'll hit a big wall and you won't be able to go on. He is a photographer who belongs to a gallery as an artist, but we have a special relationship with him. We all love him and respect each other. We are his fans. We believe in his creations, and we want his input. . It's not so much that I'm involved in SKWAT, but I'm involved in his life.
