First Down connects people with the times. Vol.4 TENDRE Taro Kawahara
Back to the 80's.

The times and people connected by First Down.
Vol.4 TENDRE Taro Kawahara

First Down was born in New York City in 1983, supporting the rise of music and street culture in the U.S. in the 1980s, and icons such as Michael Jackson and the Notorious B.I.G. wore the First Down mountain-shaped logo on their chests. Today, the fashion and music of the 80's are attracting attention as part of the 80's revival. So what was the appeal of the 80s? In this four-part Series, we delve deeply into the era from various angles. In this final installment, we interview Taro Kawahara, bassist, singer, producer, and leader of TENDRE, about the influences on his own music and his views on fashion.

A live concert is a place to release and intertwine emotions.

You have been active on Instagram recently, haven't you?

Riverbanks: In a positive sense, I did it as if I was playing. It was like, "I'm hungry, let's go out for dinner. I was too tired to stay at home and be quiet because I couldn't even launch the project.

I just remembered that you had a one-man show on November 28th for the release of "LIFE LESS LONELY". How was it?

Riverbanks: I felt that the album was complete only after the live performance. I was able to rediscover how I wanted to play the album. In any case, I realized the significance of the live performance.

As a listener, I also feel that live performances are great. It is not a one-way street, but a place where communication can take place.

Riverbanks: Yes, it is. A live concert is a great reminder of the greatness of trying to communicate face to face. Being able to see the eyes of the people listening is a huge thing. What was in your mind when you wrote the song, and what kind of image did the people who heard the song have of you... It's like we can release the feelings we have for each other and intertwine them.

TENDRE's music is not self-contained, is that your image?

Riverbanks: I would make anything for myself alone, but I make music for people to listen to. I think it is important to be able to communicate with people there. Of course, there is a sense of satisfaction when I feel that I have created a good song, but I have also reaffirmed the importance of face-to-face live performances for me.
