He worked as a designer at a select store. He later became an independent designer and launched several brands as a freelance designer before launching "Komori" in 2011. He also worked as a supervisor for "LE".
I feel like the times are coming back again.
Q. I understand that you made a down jacket for "LE" this time.
Kaneko: I wanted to try down. Just last year, I bought a down coat for the first time in a long time. I hadn't worn it for a long time, but when I tried it on, I found it to be very convenient. Once I put on the sleeves, I can spend the whole winter in it. That's why I wanted to make one for LE.
Do you have an original story this time, as you always do?
Kaneko: Yes, it is. It is modeled after the famous "P" of a certain French down brand. This is the standard down brand in my opinion, and I think it was sold at Edifice over 20 years ago. It was sold at Edifice more than 20 years ago. When I was talking with Mr. Komori, we had a common understanding that this was the standard for down.
Komori: At the time, wearing this over a tailored jacket was very popular. I carried a bag made by FELIGI.
Kaneko: Now, when I try to buy down, I find that the choices are surprisingly limited. There are mostly sporty items from outdoor brands, and then there are only items from high-end down brands. In that sense, this "P" was a very well-balanced item. It can be worn over a suit or casually. I was talking with Mr. Komori about how there is no better down than that.
Were they more like items to be worn with dresses than casual items?
Kaneko: Rather, they were items that could be worn dress or casual. Some people wore them with work jackets, others like Classico Italia. They were of high quality, probably good enough to be used in the mountains, but they could be incorporated into everyday life.
Were you wearing it that way in Japan?
Kaneko: Yes, I did. I didn't see that kind of thing much in other countries.
Were you both wearing the same clothes at the time?
Komori: I was wearing it. It was a green one.
Kaneko: I was wearing another model of the same brand. The one with a standing collar and no hood. The fabric was shiny and shiny. The "P" was a more sophisticated item. Some stores were offering them with military M-47 (French military pants), which was fashionable. Actually, the price of M-47s is skyrocketing in the vintage clothing market. So there is a sense that the times are coming back full circle.
