Your workroom is filled with culture in all directions, including manga, games, books, and CDs. There are also some fashion magazines on the bookshelf.
Basically, I tend to wear simple clothes. Since my previous job at a video production company, I have always tried to have a style that is appropriate for the job, not too flashy, but also considering what kind of clothes I can be trusted as an editor. In fact, I would like to try my hand at military wear (laughs).
So fashion is also a communication tool in your work. Do you have any particular style that you are particular about?
I am quite selfish and have many requirements before I buy something. For example, I don't want to spend a lot of time choosing clothes, so I want clothes that I can put on quickly. I want clothes that are not too eccentric and have a simple silhouette. I want clothes that I can just put on and look good without worrying about it. I have a detailed ideal, and I only have clothes and accessories that meet that ideal. By the way, the backpack from "Sarzen" will be one of them.
What were the main points that attracted you?
First of all, the quantity. Since I am often the only one on my staff, it is great to be able to fit all the equipment I need for a shoot, including camera, tripod, cords, and batteries. It meets my absolute requirement of being able to hold a 16-inch PC, and the tripod fits perfectly. When I carry a tripod by hand, I tend to misplace it (laughs). And yet it looks great because it's so sleek.
Do you use the common camera bags that are available on the market?
That one has a lot of compartments to separate camera equipment and small items. They are not suitable for storing unusual equipment or large items. I carry books with me every day, and I can't fit them in there either. On the other hand, Sarzen backpacks can be used freely and are very versatile!
I see. So this is just the right item for you, Mr. Kakinuma. What kind of situation would you like to use it for?
It is useful not only for shooting, but also for meetings! As I mentioned earlier, it's hard to find a daily-use backpack that can hold a 16-inch PC. I'm also glad that it has an inside pocket for the PC for easy storage.
Let's talk about your work. Mr. Kakinuma, why did you switch from working for a company to going freelance?
When I was a company employee, I saw my colleagues around me begin to work as freelance creators, and I felt that I wanted to create not only in the backstage world, but also in the front stage. Originally, my creative style was to release my own geeky hobbies, but now I also want to respond to the demands of society. It is sometimes difficult to find a balance between the two, but it is interesting.
Kakinuma-san, your channel has a core following. What prompted you to launch it?
As a freelance director, I was producing videos for comedians' YouTube channels, and I would often put my own face on them. However, I began to feel uncomfortable about putting my name in other people's business, and that is how I started my personal channel, "Omake no Yoru" (Night of Omake).
How do you come up with a plan for the wide range of culture that you cover at "Extra Night"?
It's like writing a college essay (laughs). It is a process of formulating a hypothesis and gathering evidence for it. Therefore, the key is what kind of hypothesis to formulate first. To make an interesting hypothesis, you need to look at things from a different angle than other people do.
How do you explore this "interesting hypothesis"?
I don't mean to say "look at the trees and don't see the forest," but there is no point in trying to dig deeper into just one thing. For example, let's say you pick up "Dr. Slump. You don't have to dig up "Arale-chan" there. If you dig deep into "Weekly Shonen Jump" and compare it to various other things, you will find out more about "Arale-chan. If you bring in other drawers you have accumulated and intertwine them, you will find new perspectives that you would not find in an Internet search. It is important to have a composite way of thinking.
I see. The video you uploaded recently discussing "Shin Evangelion the Movie: ||" was also interesting because it was told from your own unique perspective.
