What is Artist Power? Seiko Ito talks about new electric power and lifestyle.

As we live in an era after the Great East Japan Earthquake, it may be a kind of obligation to think about electric power. Minna Denryoku, a well-known renewable energy company, has started a new project called "Artist Power. It claims to be able to purchase electricity produced at artists' power plants while ensuring the traceability of the electricity by utilizing blockchain. Moreover, artists and fans are connected by renewable energy electricity, and together they can protect the global environment while having fun. We interviewed Seikou Ito, who is also the chief of Minna Denryoku and is heavily involved in this project. We went behind the scenes of "Earth Day Tokyo 2021," a special Minna Denryoku sponsored event, where he performed as Seiko Ito is the Poet, and asked him about this project.

Artists' Power.

An electricity system started by Minna Denryoku Co. that updates society through "face to face" visibility of electricity producers and air. The system allows artists to participate in the generation of renewable energy and purchase electricity produced at the artists' power plants using "ENECTION2.0," a unique P2P electricity tracking system utilizing blockchain. The "Artist Denryoku" plan was launched on April 12 (Mon.), limited to the first 100 customers (a few spaces are still available), allowing them to purchase electricity from Seikou Ito, who is also the chief of Minna Denryoku's Oshikake section. The power plant is located in Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. The three features of the "Artist's Electricity" service include: 1) The ability to purchase electricity from the artist, 2) Limited live performances, and 3) The ability to purchase electricity from the artist himself! (2) Limited live concerts and other events! (3) Supporting artists and music-related people! (2) Limited live concerts, etc.!

. autonomous decentralized power, not centralized.

A: Once again, how did you come up with the idea of "Artist Power"?

I heard about "Artist Power" from Minna Denryoku (hereafter, Minda), and the initial idea was that artists would own solar panels and consumers would buy them, but that would be a big burden on the artists. The panels aren't cheap, and you need a certain number of them to supply the power. So, I gathered everyone together, including the president of Min-Den, because I had a hunch that I would come up with an idea, and I told them to wait a minute. Then, they came up with an idea. Deadlines are amazing (laughs).

What did you do to change the solar panels, which are too expensive and difficult for artists to actually own?

. We are making it a form of virtual ownership of the solar panels. The panels that are actually in Fukushima can be virtually divided into 1/10 or 1/100 of the actual panels, and consumers can own them. It may be difficult to divide the actual real panels, but it is possible to virtually divide the rights and sell them. The "Electricity Share Land" that I have in mind as a development of the "Artist Power" project is a virtual island where various artists own panels. This project is one step before that, and is to split the solar panels that I own in Nihonmatsu, Fukushima. The consumers who choose to buy the panels will be able to purchase electricity, but what they lack will be made up for by using other renewable energy sources.

What is the main difference from other electric power sources?

The conventional idea of a centralized power plant is that if there are 100 people, you have to make and supply enough electricity for 100 people. However, I think that autonomous decentralized power plants are fine, and even if they can't supply all of the electricity, they can supply a portion of it. If there is not enough, we can use other renewable energy sources. I think that the way big companies respond to big demand with big supply is what gave birth to nuclear power plants. Now, people can use other sources to make up for the shortfall. This is because only Minden had the technology to trace electricity through the blockchain. The name "Seikou Ito Power Plant" is the result of considering the ease of understanding and the impact of the project.

You are saying that we don't necessarily need to cover all of our energy needs with renewable energy alone.

I think we should be like farmers and vegetables, selling only what we can produce. It's either a big supply that provides everything, or society is changing, and it's a matter of which lifestyle you choose. The Min-Den artist's electricity will be returned to the artist, and in return, the artist can give a live performance or write a book in return, or in some other interactive way. I have to think about doing it once every two months or so (laughs). (Laughs.) Mintendo wants to regenerate not only electricity but also culture in this way, and that is a wonderful thing.

. When I heard your explanation again, I felt I get it.

. When starting something new like this, it is good to create one successful example. The Seikou Ito Power Plant is a good example of how an artist can be compensated for his/her work, and how he/she can use renewable energy to present his/her work and culture. On the other hand, consumers can take pride in using renewable energy, and those who want to connect with me can connect with others. I think the key to this is that it is through electricity.

Seikoh's name lending is significant because it is done by an artist, isn't it?

. a billboard, right? But what makes me different from other billboards is that I have my own panel. The power generated by my panel is delivered to everyone through the intermediary of Mintendo. Or, it could be said that I am delivering what Mintendo owns through an intermediary. The consumer can also virtually own the panels. Until now, it cost tens of millions of yen to own a panel, but the blockchain has made this possible by dividing the panels virtually. . And I like the fact that the panels have a story behind them. . it's virtual, but now virtual is also real.
