Essential Wear for a New Era by Six Creators. Part 2

Everyone knows the American brand Calvin Klein. The brand's underwear and jeans, created over the past half century, have captivated young people as a symbol of modern fashion. Now the brand has joined forces with Heron Preston to release a limited collection. Preston is the poster child of the street scene, admired by the likes of Kanye West and Virgil Abloh, and is steadily making a name for himself as a designer. The clothes he makes for his home brand include hoodies, T-shirts, tank tops, jeans, and other items that one might call essential wear. The clothes are made from organic cotton and recycled materials, and are not just for looks, but for everyday wear with an eye toward the future. This collection is worn by six creators who have left their mark on the current era. In the second part, rapper KEN THE 390, musician AAAMYYYY, and skater Kogyo will appear.

PROFILE

Kaito Sasamoto aka Small Fish

Born in Hachijojima. After moving to Tokyo, he spent his days as a staff member at a skate store. His love of fishing led him to start the apparel brand "Metropolis Fishing" with a friend, which offers T-shirts, sweatshirts, and other goods. Follow him on Instagram:@_kozakana_

Do you usually wear clothes that are easy to skate in?

Small fish:It comes naturally. There is no definition of skater fashion, so I can't really say, but I tend to wear what I call "the skater" clothes. The tops are loose-fitting and the pants are thick.

What did you think of the "Heron Preston for Calvin Klein" clothes?

Small fish:It looks easy to skateboard. The silhouette is more standard than my normal clothes, but it's roomy so I can skateboard at all. The sweatshirt is also nice and loose-fitting. The silhouette is more fluffy than stooped, which is the kind of shape I like.

Do you own Calvin Klein clothes?

Small fish:I don't have clothes, but I wear underwear. When I skateboard, you can see my underwear (laughs). When I watch skating videos, I pay attention to my pants, socks, and hat. Not only the technique, but also the timing of the push and the way to bring it back. People who care about such details also care about them.

When I see your underwear, I'm not embarrassed that it's Calvin Klein.

Small fish:Yes, I am not ashamed of it. My friends of my generation all wear skate brand pants, and I have the image that "Calvin Klein" is worn by people of a slightly older generation. So I feel that they are a bit more mature.

You mentioned earlier that it is easy to skate with. What about the design?

Small fish:It's nice and simple. The denim is not straight, but rather a bit flared at the hem? It also feels stretchy. The sweatshirt is not too flashy, and this is just right for me.

You use organic cotton and recycled materials with an eye toward sustainability.

Small fish:I think it is a good thing. It is a matter of course to dispose of garbage properly, but I also carry a water bottle with me on a regular basis. I don't want to pollute the ocean and rivers because I fish. When I was fishing here before, I saw someone littering cigarettes, so I warned him. It is a pity that fishing is now facing a garbage problem and some fishing spots are closed because of it.

Fishing is booming, but while there are many people who start fishing, it is also important to have good manners.

Small fish:That's right. It's great that fishing is becoming popular, but I want to make sure that we ourselves convey manners and that kind of mindset as well. The same goes for skating. I feel that there are things we need to do to protect our own playgrounds.

Q. Why did you start fishing in the first place?

Small fish:I am from Hachijojima Island, where my father and grandfather took me fishing from a young age. It was part of my daily life, and I lived in a rich natural environment, eating the fish I caught. After I came here, I started skateboarding and stopped fishing for a while, but I started fishing again about 2 or 3 years ago. Every night after work, I would ride my bicycle to the spot, but at first I couldn't catch any fish at all (laughs). But one day I was chatting with an old man who was fishing there, and he gave me some advice. From that point on, I was hooked.

Do you still feel good?

Small fish:It's like skateboarding. It's like being able to do something you couldn't do before. So there may be a lot in common. I look for spots where no one else is fishing. I think people who like skateboarding will also like fishing.

What else do you get out of fishing besides the fun and the feeling of being there?

Small fish:I think it is being at one with nature. I feel this when I am wading in the ocean and fishing while immersed in the water. The water pressure is so strong that I can feel the pain, and I feel as if I am having a session with nature (laughs). I love nature, so it feels good to me.

By the way, how did you get the nickname "little fish"?

Small fish:When I was in junior high school, I was given my first cell phone. When I created my address, my parents said, "Why don't you just use a small fish? Sakana-kun is already there (laughs).

A crew-neck sweatshirt with dropped shoulders is styled with garment-dyed organic cotton jeans for a relaxed look. An olive-colored long sleeve T-shirt is worn as an inner layer to add a calm atmosphere. Sweatshirt ¥21,780, Long sleeve T-shirt ¥11,880, Pants ¥23,980, Cap ¥6,380, Other personal effects

So you like fish.

Small fish:I like to see, touch, and eat all of them. Maybe the environment in which I was raised had an influence on me. Catching them is fun, eating them is delicious, and they are beautiful and cool. I can't put into words why I like it so much. When I was in kindergarten, I used to make clay objects in the shape of fish.

At my age, I still love fish as much as ever. I have a lot of illustrated books at home, and I look at them all the time, even though what they say is almost the same (laughs). (Laughs.) So I became familiar with fish, and when I saw a rare fish for sale at a fish shop, my old man would compliment me, saying, "You know a lot for such a young man! I enjoy that (laughs). That's fun (laughs).

Do you have any ideas of what you would like to do in the future?

Small fish:My goal is to get a boat license. I also want to take the second level of the "Japan Sakana Proficiency Test" called "TOTOKEN. In the future, I would like to work in a job related to fish. I think I will love it forever (laughs). A fishmonger would be nice, or even a fisherman. It would also be nice to go back to the island and run a guest house. I am currently making fishing clothes, so I would like to improve that as well.
