MONOLITH MARUNOUCHI

Monolith sought logical thinking and rationality in the creation of its stores.

Is this bag necessary? This is the catchphrase of "MONOLITH," which debuted last November. The store that opened in Marunouchi, Tokyo, on December 4, perfectly reflects this philosophy and rational design. According to Taisuke Nakamuro, director of Monolith, "There is a reason behind not only the products, but also the space and the uniforms of the staff. So what exactly is this "reason"? We invited Kazuya Sasaki of SAMLLCLONE, who created the space, and Masateru Kawase of Product Twelve, who was in charge of the staff uniforms, to talk about the logic they came up with for this store.

We designed something that the staff could wear as workwear.

Kawase-san, on the other hand, designed the uniforms for the staff, what was the reason for your offer?

Nakamuro:I have been doing PR for Product Twelve, a brand designed by Mr. Kawase for Murofis, and I have to say that his manufacturing is very logical. He has a deep knowledge of military wear and workwear, and this way of thinking is reflected in his designs.

So that's how the staff uniforms were made.

Kawase:When Mr. Nakamuro told me about the concept of "Monolith," two axes came to mind. One is to be a better tool. The other is to respect the personalities of the staff. I wanted to express this in the uniforms.

We designed the garments while working on various aspects, but we wanted them to be wearable as workwear by our staff. For example, the pattern. For example, we made it easy to raise the arms. In military clothing, the elbows are tucked in on the front side, but we made them on the inside to make it easier to bend the elbows while keeping the emphasis on the elbows. We thought that by making the garments comfortable to work in, communication with customers would be smoother. In this way, we created the product with the image of supporting work at a storefront.

Also, we dared to go collarless in order to accentuate the personal side of the staff. I think the impression of the collar naturally becomes strong. So we eliminated them so that customers would have a neutral impression of the staff.

I see.

Kawase:Another thing Mr. Nakamuro and I were discussing was the need to unify the mannerisms of the staff. When we interviewed the people who work here, we learned that they always carry a pen and notebook. So we added a special pocket on the inside of the coat to hold pens and organizers. There are other pockets, but we thought that by creating a dedicated compartment, everyone would be able to do the same thing.

Nakamuro:We selected this nylon fabric after receiving two candidates that would go well with Monolith's products. At that point, I was convinced that he understood our needs. A little explanation was all it took for me to understand.

Also, we use the same shape of dot buttons at "Monolith", so they understood that part of the design and incorporated it without us having to say a word. I really appreciate that. The male and female staff members all look good together.

The uniforms look like they could be commercialized.

Nakamuro:I really think so. I tried it on myself, and it fit me well, even with my own broad shoulders.

Kawase:Thank you very much. Each person has a different shoulder slant, so we made a pattern that fits everyone.

Nakamuro:It was very easy to move around. I don't feel tight at all when I lift my shoulders, and I feel like I have a wider range of motion than in regular clothes. These sleeves, for example, give a nice fullness, and they also work as a feature. It's perfect.
