GONE FISHING

Wearing Gramiches to the river.

Gramicci" is highly regarded not only for outdoor activities but also for street wear. This time, the brand has released a capsule collection with "fishing" as its theme. How do anglers enjoy this collection? We asked musician Kohei Fukunaga, who says he has been addicted to fly-fishing for the past few years, and his good friend Mitsuaki Oto, owner of the vintage clothing store "SNAK," to join us on a trip to Tanzawa, Kanagawa Prefecture. We asked them to share their thoughts on the appeal of fishing, the joy of fishing fashion, and this collection.

I enjoy thinking about how to deal with fish. (Fukunaga)

You two are very close.

Fukunaga:I originally worked in Koenji for a while, and that's when we met.

Oto:Kohei and I were friends with a junior colleague at a vintage clothing store where I used to work, and through that connection we got to know each other and hit it off.

You had a good time talking about fishing?

Fukunaga:No, we both have had our hair cut by the same hairdresser, and the rest is just cartoons (laughs).

Oto:Yes, the moment every Monday, the LINE group gets very lively (laughs). (Laughs.) So at first, we became friends through the topic of manga.

How did you come to go fishing together?

Fukunaga:I was originally a bass fisherman, but I couldn't catch any fish at all, and I wasn't really comfortable with the bass fishing style. Then he told me that fly fishing is fun and you can catch a lot of fish, and I started going with him. He said, "Fly fishing is fun and you can catch a lot of fish," and we started going together. So I got more and more into it.

I saw you two fishing today and thought your style was simple.

Fukunaga:That's right. There are many tools with austere designs. The hair needles look cute, and the way they fit in the case is kind of adorable (laughs).

Oto:Fly fishing requires less equipment than other types of fishing.

I would say that you attack with the bare minimum.

Oto:Yes, it is. Fry's tools haven't changed over the years.

Fukunaga:It's a simple style of fishing with a rod, line, reel, and a hook. But the reel doesn't matter much.

Oto:Yes, I have been using the same tools for a long time. I can still catch fish.

Have you been fishing long?

Oto:I have been playing since I was a child. My father and grandfather used to do it, too, and I started fishing with them when I was in elementary school. I also fished for bass and trout. I started fly-fishing under the influence of my father and only did it occasionally, but Kohei became interested in it, so I started fishing again. Recently, bass fishing has been attracting a lot of attention, but as Kohei said, fly fishing is a very austere hobby, and the number of people doing it has not increased that much yet, so it was a good opportunity for me to get back into it.

Fukunaga:I was originally a bass fisherman, but he asked me to try fly fishing, and it's been about four years now.

What is it about fishing, not just fly fishing, that you both think is so interesting?

Oto:I enjoy using my head to change tools depending on the situation. Also, playing with nature is the best way to relax. It feels really good.

Fukunaga:I also like camping, and feeling nature heals both body and soul. It is also good to share the same time with friends. However, when the two of us come together, we just fish in silence and hardly talk to each other (laughs). (laughs). I enjoy talking to myself and thinking about how to deal with the fish.
