Cruise the city with Danner

Put on your Danners and grab your camera.

DANNER is known as the standard for outdoor boots, but did you know that it also has a character that is perfect for town use? We asked Andrew, a photographer who makes it his life's work to walk around town while taking snapshots, to try on a pair of Danner boots to see how they perform. We started at a boot store in Shibuya, and then headed to Blue Bottle Coffee in Nakameguro, where Andrew is a client. We followed him as he walked through the area from noon to dusk, stopping to look for shutterbugs.

In search of a pair of shoes to be my partner today, I went to Portland (!?) in Shibuya, Tokyo. to find a pair of shoes for today's partner.

First, we went to "STUMPTOWN BOOTS & RECCRAFTING" in Shibuya in search of "Danner" boots. STUMPTOWN BOOTS & RECCRAFTING is a specialty boot store that stocks high-quality American brands under the theme of the world of Portland, Danner's hometown. Staff with experience working at Danner's factory will be available to help you choose the right item, and of course, you can consult with them about fitting, maintenance, and repairs.

Andrew was easily distracted by the almost complete lineup of Danner boots on display. I don't think there are many stores in the U.S. where you can check out so many boots at once," he said. I have a pair of boots that are a collaboration between Danner and Tanner Goods, and I was surprised to see them there, too. In the end, Andrew picked up a pair of "Mountain Light" boots.

I tried it on right away. The combination of brown leather and tiger strap is classic. The texture of the leather is also nice. I like indigo, brown, and green, so I'm going to go with these because they look good with my everyday fashion and have the best hold. I like tight bottoms, so I like to wear voluminous shoes like the Mountain Light. The height is just right, covering my ankles. When the weather gets warmer, it will be cool to wear them with mountain socks and shorts," says Andrew.

Go around SHIBUYA

We took a snapshot in Shibuya, a town with a fast-paced metabolism.

I live in Yoyogi Uehara, but when I have to go to Shibuya, I walk there. I like walking and the crowded trains in Tokyo are crazy. I often visit coffee shops and bars with my friends in Shibuya, which is an energetic town. It's a town with lots of people, but I also like Shibuya in the middle of the night or in the morning when it's quieter and less crowded.

On this day, I was shooting the streets of Shibuya to check the usability of a Fujifilm compact camera that I had just bought two weeks earlier. I like this compact camera better for snapshots because I can capture natural expressions," he said. I especially like the Fuji because it takes good pictures and the shutter makes almost no noise. I used to use a 28mm lens for snapshots, but this camera has a fixed 35mm lens. So it may take some time to get used to this angle of view.

I just got them and put them down and they don't rub at all, it feels like I've been wearing them for years. The weight doesn't bother me at all, probably because they are well-balanced. The upper is firm and the sole has cushioning, so I don't get tired even after wearing them for a long time. And they are waterproof with GORE-TEX, right? I like outdoor activities and camping, and with the rainy season coming up, I'm sure I'll have more opportunities to use them.

Andrew is using a telephoto lens to photograph the cityscape from a secret spot on the roof of a building in Shibuya. Shibuya is a town of many colors, whether it be neon signs or billboards. When I first came to Japan, I was surprised by the crowds and colors at the scramble crossing, but gradually I started to notice other attractions. When I have a camera, I observe the city more carefully than usual, so I notice a lot of things.

The scramble intersection in front of the station where many people come and go even on weekdays. When Andrew first visited this place, he found it to be a strange scene where chaos and order coexisted. It's vibrant and the people are young," he said. New stores are springing up one after another, and it's a town with a fast-paced metabolism.

The streets of Shibuya, where Andrew and "Mountain Light" walked around and snapped away. Not to be outdone by the speed of the street, Andrew also looked through the viewfinder as he walked, taking pictures without stopping. His groovy shooting style, which never misses a shutter chance, is unique to Andrew, who was trained through street photography with skaters.

On the next page, we will head a little further afield to Nakameguro. We will also introduce some photos taken by Andrew later!
