HOUYHNHNM: The last style is denim-on-denim with a coat.
Kaji: I put the whole collection together in navy. I also chose items with collars for the coat, jacket, and shirt. I think the coordination worked because there is a sense of unity in the details.
HOUYHNHNM's: It is refreshing to coordinate with the details of the clothing.
Kaji: In the past few years, many people have been wearing graphics and logos. I don't wear those symbolic things, but rather wear clothes with my own intention, based on the shape and color of the clothes, as in this styling. How to do this naturally is my current mood.
HOUYHNHNM's: Do you have any denim-on-denim tips of your own?
Kaji: A.P.C.'s denim is good, so I think it works just by matching the colors. In this coordination, the hem of the shirt is slightly exposed to give it an elegant A.P.C. look. It's a small detail, but without it, the look would be a bit more American.
HOUYHNHNM's: I was also surprised that you chose boots with a current style volume for coordination with adults. It was a design that young people seem to like.
Kaji: I was actually thinking of making plain side gore boots. Like me, I had the image that these boots would be worn by young people. But when an adult actually tried them on, they looked very different in the styling, and I liked the unexpectedness of that.
HOUYHNHNM: Indeed. If these were side gore boots, it would be an orthodox style.
Kaji: The coordination itself is very standard, so we add modern symbols with the shoes to make it look more current. In short, it's like wearing sneakers. It's the same as wearing high-tech shoes as an extra element.
PETIT NEW STANDARD ¥24,200
This model combines the features of the "New Standard" and "Petit Standard" models. The deep inseam and slightly stronger taper from the knee to the hem create a beautiful silhouette.
HOUYHNHNM's: By the way, you are now in your 40s. Compared to when you were younger, has your impression of A.P.C.'s denim changed?
Kaji: When denim from "A.P.C." was popular in the 1990s, I think it was bought by fashion students and people who liked fashion. I was the type of person who could not get into the middle of such trends, so I could not get involved. On the contrary, I feel more at home now that the fashion has spread throughout the world.
HOUYHNHNM: It is more universal now.
Kaji: It's not limited to denim. The archive book "Transmission," published to commemorate the 30th anniversary of A.P.C., contained clothes from various periods, all of which did not look old, and all of which would not look out of place even if worn today. When I saw this, I understood why A.P.C. has been loved for so long. I still wear a P. C. coat I bought when I was 17 or 18 years old.
HOUYHNHNM: This year marks the 35th anniversary of A.P.C. As Mr. Kaji said, A.P.C.'s clothes fit in with all generations, young and old, because we make timeless products.
Kaji: It is simply amazing that the brand has maintained the same stance since its birth, without following trends. For fans, there is a sense of security because it never changes. I think that is why we have been able to build up the unshakable position we have today.
