Embroidery, which she began after a heartbreak, is now her job.

PROFILE

Ueda Ayutake
embroidery artist

Born in 1980. He started embroidering after his girlfriend dumped him. In 2020, he published "Himatsubu Embroidery," a book of embroidery recipes. Currently, she is working on her own cap brand "goodwalkin" using hand-embroidery.

- Tell us about your path to becoming an embroidery artist.

I was dating a girlfriend around 2016 whose hobby was embroidery. I asked her to teach me how to embroider next time, but she dumped me without teaching me. It was right at the end of the year, and I was so frustrated that I took it upon myself to start making embroideries on my own at the beginning of the year.

- When did it become a job, you say?

I kept uploading my works on SNS every day, and then, thankfully, I was contacted by a select store and asked, "Would you like to hold an event? I was just getting attention for my other work at the time. At the time, I was getting a lot of attention for my other work, and they seemed to have seen it, as if to say, "Ueda's Instagram has more embroidery work than ours. I was a bit nervous because I had received 80 orders in 2 days....

I also had a part-time job at the time, but since I had worked there for many years and was flexible, I was allowed to take time off and managed to finish the work. From there, thankfully, I've been busy with events and I'm working hard on my artwork, so I'm still taking time off from my part-time job.

- What kind of motifs do you embroider?

. Food, scenes from daily life, etc. The latest hit is an embroidery of a "line being unread". A recent hit was an embroidery of an unread LINE message. It made me feel sad when I was making it (laughs). Also, Shunsuke Nakamura, a former Japanese national team free kick specialist, has retired from soccer, so I recreated the scene of the free kick he took in the Champions League game against Manchester U (away from home).

- What is the working environment like for embroidery?

I often sit on the sofa and watch movies on my iPad.... I started embroidering on my own, but now I try to make one piece every day. It depends on the motif, but a simple piece can be done in about two hours, so I always try to make one.

- What is it about embroidery that you find so appealing?

Is this the part where you can do it even if you are clumsy or have no sense of style. I think anyone can do it. Because even I could do it! The other thing is that it is free and fun. You can use anything as a motif. People think too hard about it, so I want them to lower the bar to the bottom of the earth (laughs) and give it a try.

- Currently, you mainly embroider on caps, hats, and other small items.

Although the size will be a bit large, I would like to make a framed version in the future. So, I am thinking of an idea to combine a smaller canvas and a vase to make an embroidered vase into a real vase for a single flower. . Well, that is something to look forward to in the future. I will be doing pop-up events and exhibitions in the future, and if the opportunity arises, I would like to make the most of it by involving other work as well.

- Finally, how do you feel about wearing this down?

This time, I wore a pajama-printed set-up that Kurt Cobain wore, which has quite an impact, but I think it is balanced out by wearing Nanga's down. I also like the coyote color. It's lightweight and the fuzzy feel of the down is so comfortable that I might accidentally fall asleep outside on a bench or something (laughs).

- Finally, how do you feel about wearing this down?

This time, I wore a pajama-print set-up that Kurt Cobain wore, which has quite an impact, but I thought it was balanced out by wearing a down coat from Nanga. In keeping with the Kurt Cobain connection, I chose Jack Purcell shoes made in collaboration with "Undercover.

I also love the coyote color of this down. It's lightweight and the fuzziness of the down feels so nice that I might accidentally fall asleep on a bench outside or something (laughs).

The shoulders are made of a highly abrasion-resistant fabric to prevent the fabric from tearing when carrying a backpack. The hood has a three-dimensional structure, and drawcords can be squeezed from two directions to improve the fit on the head. Also, behind the brim of the hood is a hook that can be used to connect caps and other items to prevent them from flying away in the wind.
