JOURNAL STANDARD meets Delicious vol.01

Journal Standard meets American youth culture, more independent than ever before.

The recent developments at "Journal Standard" have been interesting. Originally, the store had a strong authentic impression with a focus on American casual, sports, and outdoor wear, but in the past few seasons, a new guideline can be seen in its development. This is especially evident this season, which marks the shop's 20th anniversary. The newest project of Journal Standard is a shop-in-shop of Delicious, a select store in Sendai. The new shop-in-shop will carry a variety of independent American brands, all of which will bring a new style not seen in the Journal Standard brand up to this point. Here, we focus on four of these brands. We will introduce them in two parts, mainly through interviews with the makers. The first part will focus on FUNCULT and ERASE PROJECTS.

Left: Cal, Right: Rick

Started by Rick, Cal and Ty from California[Claire] Fun cult.Although the number of collections is still small, this up-and-coming brand has garnered attention for its unique underground design sense. In March, the members of "Fun Cult" opened "Pakkard," a store and gallery space in downtown LA. In March, members of the Funkult management team opened "Pakkard," a shop and gallery space in downtown L.A. The brand's management strategy is unique and not straightforward. Here, we sat down with Rick and Kal at the Packard just prior to its opening to learn more about the mysterious origins of "fan cults.

Funcult-Interview-19

First of all, please tell us how Fancult was born.

lickFun Cult started in June 2016 in our studio. I've been watching a lot of videos about cults for a long time, and one in particular, Jim Jones (note 1Many of them were about. We all often talked about how powerful he must have been, since he influenced so many people in both good and bad ways. We decided to interpret the word "cult" in our own way, which is usually used in a negative sense, and express it through graphics, and decided to weave the stories of three teenagers. They grew up in a very tough environment and needed help. They decided to join a cult, a fan cult.

  • note 1He is the founder of the People's Temple, a Christian cult from the United States.

What is your role in Fun Cult?

lickI'm the art director, and I'm in charge of design. I do all the visuals for Fun Cult. Cal is part of our street team and is in charge of accounting.

calcium carbonateI am in charge of marketing and creative direction.

Please tell us about your background so far.

lickI've done a lot of different jobs, but I've always been a freelancer when it comes to design, film, and brand consulting. It was only recently that Cal, Ty, and I started Fun Cult.

Funcult-Interview-9

Can you tell us about the area where the three of you grew up?

lickI live in an area of South Central called "The Hand Reds". It's a very rough area where there is a lot of emphasis on doing bad things and a lot of disregard for learning. Cal is from Lawndale, an area where skate culture thrives. It's an area where everyone skates.

calcium carbonateI feel the same way as Rick. Clothes and skating were the cure.

What kind of culture are you interested in?

lickEveryone is different. My interests are always changing, sometimes I am very interested in sports, and sometimes I am interested in the lack of water in the world. Right now I am interested in Catholic purgatory and the afterlife.

calcium carbonateI'm a lot like Rick, I'm interested in a lot of things. Skating has always been at the center of my interests, but I'm always on the lookout for clothing, art, architecture, and design.

Who is your favorite artist?

lickI have great respect for SK8THING as a designer and NIGO as a creative director. I also wonder if the late Massimo Vignelli and Dieter Rams were a big influence in design and minimalism.

calcium carbonateI think Pharrell Williams has shown us what is possible. Even if you are a young black man, you can transcend cultural limitations if you have an idea.

What is your dream?

lickIt's like we're living the dream right now. We are able to create furniture, clothes, and everything else in the store with our own hands! With Fun Cult, we are able to express ourselves more easily.

Funcult-Interview-5

What kind of space is the "Packard" that you guys operate? It is not a so-called "normal" restaurant, is it?

lickPackard is an art exhibit space and storefront that will be opening soon in downtown LA (opening at the end of March). I am expressing my inner passion through design, culture, and art. On the other hand, I also plan to stock various brands and am in charge of buyer duties, so I feel like I'm having an amazing experience (laughs).

What are your plans for the future of Fun Cult?

lickWe intend to add more cut-and-sew related items. For the next season, we would like to expand into accessories. I would like to hold more events as "Fun Cult" to express our story through high quality clothes and graphics.

The next page will introduce the "Erace Project.
