Stan Smith from a clothing store.
Why Tomorrowland chose Stan Smith again.
PROFILE
Born in 1979, he joined Tomorrowland in 2002. After working as a buyer for the men's department and a buying manager for the women's department, he now oversees all aspects of the company's buying.
- In January 2023, a special order model of the "Stan Smith" by "Tomorrowland" will be released. Why did you choose "Stan Smith" among many sneakers?
Takeda:
Tomorrowland has developed special-order models of "adidas Originals" for the past four times. The base models are, in order of release, the "Samba," "Superstar," "Stan Smith," and "BW Army. All of these models are standard models that represent "adidas Originals". Because they are classic models, their designs have been perfected, but we have focused on how to give them a "Tomorrowland" feel. The newly released "Stan Smiths" will be our second special order.
The footwear handled by Tomorrowland is mainly dress shoes, including leather shoes. Sneakers are proposed as a casual down-front footwear. When buying sneakers, we place importance on whether or not they can be worn with a jacket or set-up and still maintain elegance. In this respect, "Stan Smiths" go well with a clean style and have a high affinity with "Tomorrowland. That is the reason why we once again chose "Stan Smith" as a special-order model.
An unlikely color scheme. The key color is "charcoal gray.
- What are the points of your special order?
Takeda: Beige was the key color for the previous "Stan Smiths. Based on the white upper, the standard color, beige was sprinkled throughout the shoe to create a classy and gentle atmosphere. On the other hand, this time, we chose charcoal gray as the key color, which gives a cool and intellectual impression that is different from the previous Stan Smiths.
- Not only the heel counter, but also the insole is charcoal gray. I don't think there has ever been a "Stan Smith" in this color scheme.
Takeda: According to a representative from adidas Originals, it is quite rare to find a "Stan Smith" with charcoal gray as the key color. How can we differentiate the Stan-Smiths from other models while maintaining the original style? We came up with this color after many simulations.
- What were the particular points you focused on in terms of detailing?
Takeda:The icon on the shoe tongue and the logo on the heel patch are arranged in the same color embossing. Although it is difficult to recognize from a distance, it is recognizable upon closer inspection. A simple and mature atmosphere reminiscent of the "Highlette," the predecessor of the "Stan Smith," has been created.
The upper is made of sustainable synthetic leather. The sole and laces are a vintage off-white color to give the shoes a "worn-in" look even when new.
The laces are made of nylon in the regular model, but have been changed to a soft-textured cotton material. In addition to white with a silver metal tip, a charcoal gray color is also included in the package so that you can enjoy the change of expression according to your mood.
The following information was released prior to the release.Special SiteThen, the nostalgic visuals shot in black and white were impressive. What was your intention in creating these?
Takeda: To complement the minimalist and stoic atmosphere of the special-order model, we decided to use black and white for the photographs. At first glance, you may think your eyes are drawn to the people, but in fact, the building in the background is also in focus, giving the photo an incongruous feel as if the background were a composite. The classic scarf-wrapped outfit gives the photo a "Tomorrowland" look, while the moving cut expresses the sports element typical of "adidas.
