Takayuki Fujii and Jun Takahashi. Non-native and Undercover.
What is the narrative of collaboration that is inevitable?

UNDERCOVER and NONNATIVE have long been leaders in the Japanese fashion scene. At first glance, it would seem that the two brands have little in common, but in fact, the designers of both brands, Jun Takahashi and Takayuki Fujii, have been quietly deepening their friendship for the past several years. And now, their friendship has culminated in a major achievement. The name of the collection is "OZISM. In other words, Ozu-ism. And the theme is "harmony. Why Ozu (Yasujiro) and why harmony? There was a narrative and context that could only be described as inevitable.

. This material (POLARTEC®️ Wind Pro®️) is very good.

Fujii:This material was used in a collaboration with "Gramicci" last year, and Jonio used to wear the pants a lot. So, the material was easy to decide on. When I think of samue, I tend to think of dyeing with plants and indigo, but at first I wanted to make it more of a hybrid. I wanted to make it more of a hybrid, which is what Undercover is all about, and I also wanted to see what would happen if I mixed it with my own idea of what the outdoors looks like, and we went back and forth about it. . As a result, I made three or four samples.

That's great.

Fujii:However, it was more like a casual conversation at 6:00 a.m., or a little bit of work when we met, rather than a meeting every time, so it wasn't like we were working on the project from the ground up.

Takahashi:. yes. So overall, the product is in line with our daily life. It has a down-to-earth feel to it.

I don't think it would have been possible 10 years ago.

Takahashi:That is true.

So, as communication based on the land of Hayama and Akiya was fostered in this way, the keywords of harmony and Yasujiro Ozu emerged.

Fujii:Yes, I have. I have not been so active in watching Ozu, but this time Jonio gave me specific instructions on which films I should watch.

Takahashi:I have always loved Japanese movies and watch them a lot, but I was like, "I want the Fujii family to see this one," and I recommended a lot more than just Ozu.

Fujii:Personally, I didn't have an image of Jonio-san finding movies like Tora-san or Tsuribaka interesting. It was more like a Western film.

I can sort of understand that.

Takahashi:Tora-san is a very interesting movie. Also, I think there are things that resonate with us as we get older. Ozu's films, in particular, are about family, and when you see them in the context of having children of your own, they really hit home.

. I'm sure of it.

Takahashi:. It is not that the samue appears in Ozu's works. However, by looking at the appearance of Chishu Kasasa and the beauty of the images, it would appear somewhere, and I wanted to express that.

I think the "ism" of "OZISM" is exactly what it sounds like. You have incorporated a kind of spirituality into it.

Fujii:When the word "OZISM" came from Jonio , I thought it was very nice. I was impressed.

Takahashi:I was in charge of the graphics for this project, and when I wanted to crown the project, I thought, "This is Ozu.

For this look, you were shooting in Kitakamakura.

Takahashi:The station in Kitakamakura appears frequently in Ozu's films, and I liked it very much. Furthermore, Ozu's grave is also located in a temple in Kitakamakura, and Fujii and I have been there.

Fujii:. You went there, didn't you? Kitakamakura station hasn't changed much from the past, hasn't it? The entrance is still unmanned. I think such a station is rare.

The atmosphere in that area is very nice, isn't it? . The silence when the trains stop at night is very relaxing.

Takahashi:It was very mysterious when I saw it in the movie, and when I actually went there, I found, as Fujii said, that it has not changed at all from the past. The appearance of Engakuji temple across the street from the station is also very nice. It is a temple for a temple.

Mr. Jonio has often expressed his fascination with this kind of harmony in recent years, but what about you, Mr. Fujii?

Fujii:. Since I am from Nara, I had a rather negative reaction to such things. My parents' house was near Yakushiji Temple and Toshodaiji Temple, so I was not that interested in them. . Even Kyoto is totally different from Jonio's visit to Kyoto, isn't it?

Takahashi:. the way you see it.

Fujii:Yes . It's like going back. Moreover, Nara is a protective town, so it is different from Kyoto as well. . I knew about the Kawai Kanjiro Memorial Museum, but I didn't go there. But when I asked my father about it, he told me that he used to watch Ozu and other films at home. We had never talked about that before, but now we finally have the chance to do so.

Takahashi:. There is age, isn't there? Just like in movies, there are things that you can finally understand after gaining life experience and raising children. . When I went to Kyoto on a school excursion in junior high or high school, I was like, "Another temple.

Fujii:I went on a school excursion to Kamakura , you know.

. from the old capital to the old capital (laughs).

Takahashi:After all, when you grow up, you see things in a totally different light.

. Of the several products you have in the works, is this jacket going to be the main one?

Takahashi:Yes, it is.

Fujii:Jonio, you used to do kendo, didn't you . . This is somewhat similar to a dojo, isn't it?

Takahashi:I did like the dohitoe when I was doing kendo , I liked the dohitoe. . I thought they were cool, including the hakama. . However, in terms of incorporating them into my own designs, I was still reluctant to use this collarless style.

Fujii:That's true. . those are uniforms, you know.
