What did Sousuke Ikematsu, Taiga Nakano, and Daichi Watanabe bear in Kankuro Kudo's "A Town Without Seasons"?

Based on Shugoro Yamamoto's novel of the same title, "A Town Without Seasons," planned, written, and directed by Kankuro Kudo, is now available exclusively on Disney Plus. Set in a setting reminiscent of the post-disaster world, the film depicts a gritty theme, but with a wide range of frontage, sprinkled with Mr. Kudo's typical humor. We asked Sousuke Ikematsu, Taiga Nakano, and Daichi Watanabe, who played members of the town's youth club and led the story, to look back on their time on the set, where they were all impressed by Mr. Miyafuji's direction. From the fun of acting to the determination of the actors, this interview gave us a glimpse of the many facets of the job of an actor.

story

Twelve years after the "What" disaster, there was a temporary housing facility in this town where people who were affected by the "What" disaster were sheltered. There were still 18 households living there, but if their monthly income exceeded 120,000 yen, they were "immediately evicted" from their homes. The residents were living on the edge, as they had to be evicted immediately if their monthly income exceeded 120,000 yen. The main character, Hansuke, a.k.a. Shinsuke Tanaka, was offered up to 10,000 yen if he reported what he saw and heard in town. He infiltrates the town with a light heart. However, Hansuke is the one who is in the wrong. He is a man who has lost everything due to his "penis" and is just living on the edge. However, as he observes the residents living on the edge, Hansuke gradually grows fond of them. Meanwhile, rumors begin to circulate in the town that the temporary housing complex is about to be demolished. ......

From the three people's point of view, Kankuro Kudo is amazing.

This film is planned, written, and directed by Mr. Miyafuji. Mr. Taiga, you recently appeared in a film written by Mr. Miyafuji. How was your impression of Mr. Miyato's direction?

Nakano:I have been involved in several productions written by Mr. Miyafuji, but I was very happy to be able to participate for the first time in a production directed by Mr. Miyafuji. In fact, I was surprised at how precise, fast, and witty he was in his direction.

What exactly do you mean by "precise"?

Nakano:For example, when I have an idea for something I want to do, they are very clear about whether it is acceptable or not, and they make detailed adjustments, such as saying that it is acceptable up to this point but not from here on out. They also give me very clear answers when I ask them about the feelings of the role.

Of course, the direction of the characters and the scenes that advance the story, but even for the other characters who appear at the edges of the screen, there is a sense of humor in the detailed direction, such as "It would be interesting if this person made this kind of move," and every single detail is actually interesting. And then Mr. Miyafuji himself plays the role, which is the funniest part of all, and I thought, "I can't do that.

I see. Mr. Ikematsu, you worked with Director Miyafuji...

Ikematsu:This is my first time. I have never appeared in a scripted film nor co-starred in one before, so it was really a first time for me. It was really interesting to be on set this time. I have seen many of your scripts, films you have directed, and films in which you have appeared as an actor, and all of them are top-notch. Moreover, each choice was very precise, and he stood straight in the middle of the film until the end without blurring the lines at all. He was extremely tough, smart, and kind.

The way each character's feelings were approached, the way the story was told, and the way the emotions were captured were all excellent. The myriad of ideas and the quickness and uniqueness of the choices, which may have come from experience, were very special. As if by magic, the scene, the people in it, the crew behind the camera, and the story laughed and took over. As a performer, I felt like I could fly anywhere. I think I was carried by Mr. Miyafuji's energy this time.

How was it for you, Mr. Watanabe?

Watanabe:As a musician, I have worked with Mr. Miyafuji in the past, including live performances. In the past, I have often seen Mr. Miyafuji as an explosive performer, but this time I met him as a smart and thoughtful person who gets things done. Even from a distance, I could almost hear the sound of his head spinning like a motor.

Of course his directing skills are excellent, but I also felt that he is an exquisite balancer. For example, when filming a tough scene, he would wrap it with exquisite humor when the audience would only suffer if the scene was just painful to watch.

The more people that appear, the more difficult it must be to balance them...but what can I say, it's like a lot of seesaws are crossing each other, and they are balanced and balanced perfectly. So, I thought that the concentration was so great that it was hard to talk to them.

I'm personally wondering if it was the director's direction or an ad-lib by the actors. ...... In episode 7, when Tatsuya (played by Taiga-san) is in a very sad situation, there is a scene where he drinks standing up instead of sitting down in his room, right? I thought that was amazing and hard to come up with. Was that ad-libbed?

Nakano:It's an ad-lib...can I ask you to take that as a yes (laughs). I'm a little uncertain, but I think it was Director Yokohama's (Editor's note: Miyafuji was in charge of episodes 1, 2, 4, 5, and 10; Satoko Yokohama was in charge of episodes 3, 7, and 8; and Naoki Watanabe was in charge of episodes 6 and 9) idea.
