Fishing trip to Hokkaido. HOUYHNHNM FISHING CLUB enjoys the lake and the Sea of Okhotsk very much. Part 1

Fishing and traveling go hand in hand because some fish are limited to certain seasons and places. Going to an unfamiliar place is stimulating, and places that are not usually on the list for a trip are seen in a different light when fishing is the objective. Besides fishing, dining and sightseeing are also part of the fun. This time, HOUYHNHNM FISHING CLUB visited the East Hokkaido area! We will enjoy fishing in this northern land rich in nature. We usually enjoy mainly bass fishing, but on this trip we tried trout fishing and ocean fishing. This article is the first part of a trout fishing trip around a magnificent lake!

To catch the unique fish of Hokkaido.

Lake Akan is home to a wide variety of fish species, such as the native Hokkaido amemasu and himemasu trout, as well as the fantastic fish Itou, which can grow to over one meter in length. In particular, the ame trout of Lake Akan are different from other lakes in that they have a golden color on their bodies, giving them the nickname "golden ame.

This time, we will mainly use spoons as our lures. Lake Akan has fishing regulations, and the only hooks that can be used are single hooks without a barb. We chose a color that we thought would catch fish and started casting. The view of Mt. Ouakan rising in front of you is fantastic!

Ishii:I didn't expect to be cold when wading, but since my waders are made of neoprene, I don't feel the coldness of the water that much. The Daiwa wear I got the other day is also working well. The feeling of blending in with nature is very pleasant. It's my first time using a spoon, so I'm going to try it just as the guide taught me.

Komatsu:It is a stress reliever to swing the rod as hard as you can to make it fly as far as possible amidst the scenic beauty of the area. I feel like I have detoxed and become a real human being. How should I move the spoon to make the fish react? I will try various things.

Ikemoto:It feels good to fish while viewing the seasonal Hokkaido scenery. I wonder what kind of terrain the lake has and where the fish are. Just like wading for bass fishing I did in Lake Biwa the other day, it is interesting to explore.

According to the guide, American trout and brown trout react differently to the lure. How long do you wait after the lure lands on the water before you start reeling it in? And how quickly or slowly do you reel it in? Trial and error is part of the fun.

I tried for a while but the response was not good. I'm fly fishing, other anglers are spreading bait and seem to be catching fish. ...... I move around a bit. Wading through knee-deep water was an unusual and nerve-wracking experience, like an adventure. We arrive at a point where a shallow headland extends offshore and the water is deeper around it.
