Seabass fishing at a fishing festival! HOUYHNHNM FISHING CLUB in Osaka, Japan.

HOUYHNHNM FISHING CLUB came to Osaka. The purpose of this visit was to check out the new products at the Fishing Show OSAKA 2024, the largest fishing tackle exhibition in Japan, where all fishing manufacturers gather under one roof. This is an event where you can actually see, hear, and experience the innovations developed by manufacturers using the best of their technologies. In addition, you can also go fishing in Osaka Bay! And what's more, it was a special fishing trip where we got to use DAIWA's new products one step ahead of the rest!

Boat sea bass in Osaka Bay!

HOUYHNHNM FISHING CLUB headed for Osaka Bay early in the morning of the day after enjoying the "FISHING SHOW OSAKA 2024". Our target was sea bass! However, the captain told us that they had not caught any sea bass the day before. ...... There was a sense of disquiet in the air, but it was all right. Let's have fun while competing to see who can catch the biggest sea bass.

This time, we were allowed to use new products from Daiwa. First is the "SWAGGER" spinning rod. It is a bass rod, but its specs are perfect for sea bass fishing, so I will use it in the sea as well. The other is a lure that has a solid track record in sea bass fishing, the "Shoreline Shiner Z Set Upper S75-DR", a new size of 75mm. I will use both of these lures while fishing for sea bass in Osaka Bay!

We arrive at the first point. It is the first morning when the fish are very active, but the water temperature is low, so they seem to be lurking on the bottom. I wanted to use the new "Shoreline Shiner Z Set Upper S75-DR," but I used a metal jig.

After about 20 minutes of dropping a metal jig near the wall and luring it in, Mr. Murayama got an early hit! Mr. Murayama was the first one to get a hit!

At 62 cm, it is a good size from the first fish!

Murayama: I changed to a smaller, lighter metal jig to match the small fish swimming by and got a hit.

At least it was a relief to know that we could fish today. After a while, Ishii also shouted, "Isn't that rod big? Isn't that rod big?

The catch was a black sea bream called Chinu. And it was a pretty good size.

Ishii: Actually, I had a bite before the chinook, but it got away. I was in the mood to catch it. Then I got another bite, but the pull was so strong that I was expecting a huge sea bass. I was expecting a huge sea bass, but it turned out to be a Chinu. At any rate, I was happy because it was my first chinu.

Both sea bass and chinook seem to be responding to metal jigs. Komatsu, who was also searching along the wall, had his chance.

Komatsu: It was 45 cm, not as big as Nobu-san (Murayama), but I was happy to catch it. I let the metal jig land on the bottom and reeled it in a few times, and it bit. I want to keep this up and aim to increase the size of the fish.

We can't say we had a big catch, but within an hour or so of leaving the boat, we had a steady stream of fish! Our target is sea bass, but the best part of ocean fishing is that you never know what you will catch. Ishii's rod caught the following fish.

It is a konoshiro, a large growth of kohada, a popular sushi fish. Since this fish is preyed upon by sea bass, we will try to catch a big one by swim-fishing.

Mr. Murayama caught a nice size fish again. The hit lure was a metal jig. It seems that the fish are still on the bottom.

And Mr. Hayashida! This is huge!

Hayashida: I was throwing "Shoreline Shiner Z Set Upper S75-DR" but there was no reaction on the surface, so I changed to a metal jig and reeled it in fast and caught it. At first, it was the first fish, and the size was not bad.

When it came time to measure the size, it was just short of Mr. Murayama's record. Too bad! We move on to the next point.
