WOOLRICH OUTDOOR LABEL : FLY FISHING

Beautiful fishing place created from wool rich.

Woolrich was founded in 1830 in Plum Run, Pennsylvania, USA. The "Woolrich Outdoor Label" collection, which was derived from this brand in 2018, is based on the vast archives of the long-established brand and is created with today's technology and sensibility. Did you know that this label has a honeymoon relationship with fishing? We asked Jerry Ukai (illustrator) and Ryuka (model) to wear clothes designed for fly fishing and went out with them.

Enrapturingly beautiful gestures and loops.

The weather was warm and sunny in early March, with the sound of spring in the air. Two anglers gather at a fishing spot in Shizuoka. Jerry Ukai and Ryuka are dressed in Woolrich Outdoor Label clothing, and they are ready to try their hand at fly-fishing.

Jerry gives a detailed lecture on how to use fishing equipment to Ryuka, who usually does ocean fishing but has no experience in river fishing. What attracted them to fishing in the first place?

Jerry Cormorant: I used to do a series of articles in a magazine called "SOTOKEN" that studied outdoor activities, and one of the members, Fumihiko Okabe, loves fishing, so we used to do tenkara together all the time. While fly fishing requires a rod, reel, and line, tenkara requires only a rod and line. I thought it was simple, so with practice I could catch fish right away.

The Series was the catalyst for his first fishing trip, and he is now hooked on fly fishing.

Jerry Cormorant: About three years ago, I was on a project for a magazine called "PAPER SKY magazine, I went fishing every day for 10 days with a group of friends. We mainly fished the ocean, but for two days we fished the upper reaches of the Oigawa River in Shizuoka. The guide gave us a lure and told us it would be easy to catch fish, but we couldn't catch any. I had never fished with a lure before, and I had to hold the line down as soon as I cast it. That was very frustrating.

Jerry Cormorant: I was still feeling frustrated long after the shoot was over, and since I had time until dinner, I tried one more time, but it was still no good. The photographer who was accompanying me at that time was a fly fisherman, and he was so good that he was a fishing guide in New Zealand. He showed me how he does it, and the way he loops the line when he casts is so beautiful and clean. It was so enchanting to watch that I wanted to learn this game myself, and I thought that if I did so, I would be able to play together with these friends in the future.

It is often said among fishermen that "a person with beautiful manners is a good fisherman. It is pleasant to watch a person who can perform a series of movements in a beautiful and fluid manner.

On the other hand, Ryuka started ocean fishing four years ago.

Ryuka: When I had some time on the Corona Disaster, I went to visit a friend of mine who had a fishing boat. That was my first time sea fishing, and I caught a lot of sea bass (laughs). I got hooked and have been specializing in ocean fishing ever since.

Ryuka: From there, I started fishing for snapper and bluefish by light jigging. Eventually, I even caught a tuna. Recently, I often go there to refresh myself.

Now that everything is ready, the fishing finally begins. First, Jerry teaches Ryuka how to cast.

Jerry Cormorant: First of all, you need to cast cleanly, and then you need to avoid getting tangled up in the trees. You should do it with that in mind.

Ryuka: It is so much more delicate than the fishing rods I usually use. It's lightweight, which makes it difficult to throw!

Ryuka casts again and again, letting her body get used to the sensation of the rod. When she has gotten the hang of it, she sets her sights on the upper reaches of the river.
