Making Elation by Design

Learning from the new 10 eyevan, how beautiful design should be.

”10 eyevan" was born in 2017 based on the concept of "beautiful tools”. Rather than releasing a collection every season, the brand maintains a stoic stance, releasing items only when they are satisfactory. The brand has announced a new collection for the first time in two years. This time, sheet metal is the featured material. This is an unexpected approach that is distinctly different from conventional creations, which have excelled in the use of classic materials and manufacturing methods. There existed a kind of stream of consciousness of the designer, Hirotaka Nakagawa. Together with Taisuke Nakamuro of Murofis, who is in charge of PR for this brand, we will touch on Mr. Nakagawa's ideas on design.

With these parts, you don't have to do anything extra.

10 Ivan" has had four series so far, and now a fifth has been added, hasn't it?

From top to bottom: "Standard," "Rimway," "Celluloid," and "Thermont.

Nakagawa: One is the classic metal-framed ones called "standard". The third is a series of "celluloid" frames, and the fourth is a blow-type frame called "thermont. And now, for the first time in two years, we have created a series called "Sheet Metal. This is made by cutting a titanium sheet into frames.

It has a very industrial feel to it.

Nakagawa: This is a relatively modern manufacturing method that was developed in the early 2000s. At that time, stainless steel was used as a material, but we succeeded in making this sheet from titanium. It was the first one to be made in Japan.

Nakamuro: Sheet metal is a bit more modern in design.

Nakagawa: That may be so. I thought it would be interesting to combine these industrial, modern-inspired materials with the sophisticated organic parts used at "10 I thought it would be interesting to combine these industrial, modern-inspired materials with the sophisticated, organic parts used by "Ivan". However, I myself was not looking for a design that was too innovative, so it was a challenge.

No.3 v ¥99,000

No.15 v ¥99,000

Nakamuro: However, when I looked at the finished product, I saw that it did not look like sheet metal in a good sense, and I think that even people who usually prefer wearing classic glasses would like this design.

Nakagawa: I myself had never worn sheet metal glasses. I like classic things, so I tend to choose only things that have been around for a long time. Not only glasses, but also watches and shoes, I tend to shy away from brand new things. But one day, I came to see sheet metal as one of the classic categories. That is when the design process began.

You just compared eyeglass design to architecture. Did you have the technology in place to create "beautiful tools" out of sheet metal?

Nakagawa: I have just introduced a series made of a wire-like material called "rim wire," which is not a surface but a line, so it is easy to make it beautiful. This was something that stuck with me for a long time, and then I came up with the idea of making a beautiful and strong board from the beginning.

Nakamuro: So you have created it.

Nakagawa: I originally used sheet metal for "Ivan 7285" and had a lot of trial-and-error data from that time. Based on that data, I created an appropriate recipe for "10 I have created an appropriate recipe for "Ivan" based on this data. Strictly speaking, it is possible to make metal from materials in the car industry, but it is difficult in the eyeglass industry. The scale is completely different. So this time, we approached a company that manufactures metals and asked them what kind of innovations we could make to achieve what we were aiming for.

Are you the kind of person who thinks of processing an already existing material?

Nakagawa: Yes, it is. This may sound very geeky, but we press the sheet to compress it. Then we cut it into a frame shape and press it from various angles and with various degrees of force. This makes the surface beautiful and increases its strength. This two-step pressing process creates the beautiful and rigid "10 This two-step pressing process produces a special titanium plate that is unique to "Ivan".

It sounds simple when you put it into words, but it must be a very detailed process, right?

Nakagawa: Yes, it is. It is an adjustment of a few tenths of a millimeter. But once that is done, it is just a matter of assembling. Because it is a special material, we don't have to do anything extra to make it work. It was a while ago when I was working on the nose pads used at 10 Ivan. When I showed someone the mother-of-pearl nose pads we use at , he said, "If you have these parts, you don't have to do anything extra.

Nakagawa: At that time, I wondered what it meant to "not have to do anything extra"? I was a bit puzzled by the very implied phrase. I was a little puzzled by the implied words, but now I understand what they mean.

Is it about making the most of the flavors of the ingredients, as they say in the culinary world?

Nakagawa: That's exactly what I mean. If the ingredients are delicious, salt is all you need. That phrase has remained with us for a long time, and 10 Ivan has always used it as the basis of our approach to manufacturing.
