An unprecedented camera bag.
How the Monolithic Shooting Tote was born.

When you hear the word "camera bag," what shape comes to mind? A shoulder bag like DOMKE? A carry-on bag like PELICAN? Well, these are probably the standard. In the midst of all this, a completely new type of camera bag has been completed. The photographer Katsuhide Morimoto and the fashion buyer Keiji Kaneko are the unusual team behind this product. In addition, the production was handled by MONOLITH, a well-known company in HOUYHNHNM's. We were involved in the planning and production from the very beginning. We have been closely following the trends in manufacturing since the planning stage. Our starting point was a lament that "there is no right answer for camera bags. From there, an unexpected bag was born. Here is the full story of our big project, which took about three years to complete.

STEP02: SELECTION A new idea of tote with camera bag.

The mission this time is to define the direction of the camera bag. Based on their ideas from the previous session, Mr. Kaneko and Ms. Morimoto brought their favorite bags and discussed their ideas to determine what kind of bag they would create. Will their opinions be in agreement?

Nakamuro: This time, we asked the couple to bring their favorite bags.

Kaneko: I brought a backpack and a shoulder bag. I bought the backpack for traveling. The top part of the backpack opens like a lid and can be quickly removed from the top. I thought it would be easy to use and store my lenses vertically. This is convenient because I can also put my computer in it.

Kaneko: I use the shoulder bag the most in my daily life, and I can open the lid and quickly get what I need out of it. With a backpack, I have to do more actions, but with a shoulder bag, I can get what I need with fewer steps, which is very convenient. This one can hold about three cameras, and the capacity is perfect.

Morimoto: I brought a tote bag. I used to use a backpack, but it was a hassle to take it out after all. For example, when filming on location overseas, I often leave my equipment bag at the hotel and carry the things I need for the location in my tote bag. Having a long strap attached to it makes it convenient for transportation. I want to reduce the number of actions required to press the shutter.

Nakamuro: And the best way to do that is with a tote?

Morimoto: That's right. I can quickly take out the camera from the side and take a quick shot. With a messenger or shoulder bag, you have to start by opening the flap. I thought it would be nice if it could be transformed into a shoulder bag when traveling, depending on the situation.

Kaneko: What about shoulders without flaps?

Morimoto: Overseas, there are a lot of pickpockets and such, so I want to hold on to them as long as I can.

Kaneko: I see. Then I guess I'd prefer a tote with a long handle.

Morimoto: Personally, I prefer shorter handles (lol). The tighter the handle, the easier it is to hold. If I had to say something, I would like to have some cushioning to protect the equipment inside. So I brought this tote, which has a large pocket on the outside. I put my iPhone and other small things in these pockets. If there are too many pockets, you might wonder where you put them. I'm fine if I can just put things in one pocket.

There are many ways to hold a camera, but I'm the type of person who wraps it in a Velcro cloth and puts it right in," says Morimoto.

Nakamuro: What do you think of this tote from Kaneko-san's point of view?

Kaneko: I thought it was very nice. I thought it was very reasonable.

Nakamuro: The idea of a tote in a camera bag is interesting, isn't it? What would normally be partitioned off in the main compartment is now outside, and that leads to ease of use, doesn't it? What was it originally made for?

Morimoto: I don't know. A friend of mine had one and I thought it was nice, so I bought one too. I was looking for a tote made of waterproof fabric because cotton would get my equipment wet.

Kaneko: I have been to the factory of this brand, it was in Birmingham (England).

Morimoto: The bag is easy to use on location, but it can also be used on days when you just want to take your camera with you.

Kaneko: While keeping Mr. Morimoto's professional perspective, it would be good to arrange for people who have only one camera but love photography and take pictures often, considering the general situation.

Morimoto: Yes, that's right. I like cameras just a little bit, and it would be convenient if I could carry a compact camera and another one, or have one lens as a spare, and a case for an SD card. It would be good to focus on travel as a use for the camera. But it would also be easy to use in everyday life.

Kaneko: Various manufacturers must be thinking about such things, but why is there nothing like this?

Morimoto: It's interesting that you solve that with one simple tote (laughs). (Laughs) But the contents are actually amazing. Even a small partition inside can be useful. I think it would be easy to use if there is a room for lenses and a room for cameras.

Kaneko: It is certainly convenient to have such a system. My shoulder has such a system, and it is very easy to use.

Nakamuro: Nice. If I want to make it versatile, the base is a tote, but it would be nice to be able to attach a strap for the shoulder as well. What would be the ideal length for the handle of the tote to be long enough to hold, and what would be the ideal length for the shoulder straps?

Morimoto: It should be a length that fits your body. I imagine it has an adjuster, so that when you carry it on your back, you can just snap it on with one touch.

Kaneko: How big should the bag be?

Morimoto: Frankly, this bag is too big. I think it could be smaller. However, if it is too small and cute, it would be hard for adults to carry. Personally, I would like it to be large enough to hold a computer. I usually use a 17" laptop, which is quite large.... That is for work use only, so I would like it to be large enough to hold a smaller sized computer.

Kaneko: Nice. Looks easy to use.

Nakamuro: We would like to take the ideas you have given us and try to make a sample. Is it a tote or something that can also be used as a shoulder bag? I have a feeling that both Mr. Morimoto and Mr. Kaneko are looking for similar functions, so next time we will take a look at what we have made, and hope to revise the details.
