The two types of pearls employed were white butterfly pearls and Akoya pearls. The former are pearls harvested in Australia and Indonesia, and are characterized by their large size (9 mm or more in diameter). The latter are typical Japanese pearls, small in size but with a mellow luster that exudes elegance.

A necklace of 9mm to 11mm white butterfly pearls in a perfect gradation of sizes, or a necklace of 6mm Akoya pearls, Mikimoto's sense of beauty nurtured over 125 years is breathtaking, but what should not be overlooked are the 925 silver chains and logo plates that accompany them. As the brand name "Comme des Garcons," which means "like a boy," suggests, the 50-year history of "Comme des Garcons" has been a series of experiments in breaking down gender boundaries.

Kawakubo said that pearls have something in common with Comme des Garçons, but he was probably referring to the original corporate culture of Mikimoto, which has been handed down from the company's founder, Kokichi Mikimoto, who was the first in the world to successfully cultivate cultured pearls.
