The legendary master filmmaker Edward Yang, who passed away at the far too young age of 59, will release his 1991 masterpiece "The Guling Street Boy Murder Case" in a 4K restored and digitally remastered 3-hour 56-minute version at Kadokawa Cinema Yurakucho on Saturday, March 11, and at the Shinjuku Musashino Theater and other theaters nationwide on Saturday, March 18. Although the film is 25 years old, it has never been released on DVD, and if you don't take the opportunity to see it at this screening, you don't know what will happen in the future.
~STORY~.
Taipei, early 1960s. Xiao Yi (Xiao Xu), who failed the entrance exam for the daytime section of Jianguo High School and attends the night school, is always hanging out with Wang Mao (Wang Mao) and Fei Ji (Fei Ji), who belong to the delinquent group "Small Park". One day, Xiao Yi meets an injured girl named Xiao Ming at the infirmary. She is the girlfriend of Honey, the boss of Xiao Park. Honey had fought with the boss of the rival group "217" for Xiao Ming, killed them, and disappeared. With Honey's absence, Xiao Ming has lost control of the park, and now the power of the father who manages Zhong Shan Hall is being used to control the park by the Hua Tou.
Koshi has a faint crush on Komei, but when Honey suddenly returns, the conflict between the groups becomes more intense, and Koshi and his friends become involved.
Zhang Chen, a leading Asian star who was discovered by director Edward Yang and made a strong debut playing the main character Xiao Xu in this film, came to Japan to talk about his memories of the film and his view of director Edward Yang.

How did you get involved in your first production?
Chang: The producer, Yu Wei Yan, and all of my family members were very close (Chang's father and brother play the protagonist's brother and father in the film). Before this film, I was just a boy who liked to play basketball, and I think I was a bit silly or didn't think too much about it compared to now.
Do you remember anything about being in the show?
Chang: Since there are many people of the same generation in this film, I made friends after the shooting, and some of them have become quite close.
What do you remember about the director Edward Yang?
Chang: The way he wore glasses, because he was nearsighted. The other thing was the childlike smile he showed outside of the shoot. However, during the filming, there was a tension on the set, which is characteristic of production. The director was very passionate about filmmaking, and I think he was a person with clear likes and dislikes.
What is your favorite scene in the film?
Chang: Yes, I think it's the scene where they go to the billiard room to fatten themselves up. I like the way the scene is staged.
You have appeared in major productions in Hollywood and China.
Chang: It is more site-specific than country-specific. It depends on the director. A film is a collaborative production, but a director who is unique is the center of the film. Director Yang is one such director, and Wong Kar-wai is another.
Once again, what do you think of "The Guling Street Boy Murder Case"?
Chang: I was taught how interesting filmmaking is. It is stimulating and good to see how adults devote themselves to making things with passion.

Inspired by an actual incident that took place in Taiwan in the 1960s, this film depicts the sparkle and cruelty of youth and the "swell of the times" with vivid images and an excellent script, The film has been enthusiastically supported by creators and movie fans around the world.
In Japan, the film has been praised by many filmmakers and cultural figures, including the famously dry Naruyoshi Kikuchi, Shigehiko Hasumi, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Masatoshi Nagase, Kazushige Abe, and Yuki Yamato, as well as overseas masters such as Martin Scorsese and Wong Kar Woong.
It certainly does not have the obvious flamboyance of a modern film. However, the camera work, the shadows, the costumes of the performers, the locations and scenery, the emotions, and the music all come together to compose a picture that draws the viewer in. It is four hours long, twice the length of the average movie, but it will be four hours that will bring you an irreplaceable and blissful cinematic experience!
