A challenge to traditional surfing, two geniuses team up to create an exhibition of art books that defy conventional wisdom.

When one hears the word "surfing," one imagines clear blue skies and open seas. However, Tokyo-based design studio "upcoming.studio" has released an art book that shakes up such taken-for-granted values.

The title is "Perfect Designs by David Black - The Nightmare of Surfing". It is a collaboration between Perfect Designs, a Paris-based company that produces oddly shaped surfboards and fins, and David Black, a photographer known for his work with Daft Punk and David Lynch.

Limited edition of 300 copies
¥7,700

Captured in this art book are Perfect Designs' revolutionary surfboards with dark, gothic visuals and iconography, and fins with dangerous, doomed designs. Shot by David Black while traveling between Paris and Los Angeles.

Cut through David's exploration of "Western Noir," a unique form of expression, the work is so experimental that without explanation it would be hard to believe that it is about surfing. It could be seen as a challenge to traditional surfing.

The book is now available for preorder. As a launch event, there is also an exhibition where you can touch surfboards and fins by Perfect Designs and original prints by David Black. Check out the information below for more details.
