Fascinating with ropes, endless possibilities for expression. Jacqueline Sardell's first solo exhibition in Japan will be held at Gallery COMMON.

Jacqueline Surdell, a textile artist born and based in Chicago, USA, will hold her first solo exhibition in Japan, "Bliss!

Sardell creates huge, three-dimensional works by weaving kilograms of industrial rope through the gaps between the warp threads on a loom the size of a wall painting that he has made himself. He skillfully weaves industrial ropes and other materials and combines them with different materials to express them three-dimensionally.

It is likely to be exhibited in the gallery with a particular way of expression, from large works over 2 meters in size to small works.

His interest in repetitive and laborious craft methods has its roots in his years of playing volleyball and the industrial and labor history of his native Chicago.

The exhibition will feature a delicate and bold array of new works created during a month-long residency, including large-scale sculptures and installations that continue to explore the relationship between landscape, the body, and spirituality.

It is my contemplation of the transformation that occurs between a bird's eye view of a particular place and the actual physical experience of being exactly "here" or "there," and it is a kind of voicing of a contemplation. The work is an exploration of new ways to think about landscape as a genre, exploring the space between intimacy and distance. (Excerpts from comments)
