A story of wandering "souls. The movie "What We Are" starring Nana Komatsu and Ryuhei Matsuda is now in theaters.

Tetsuya Tomina, a director attracting attention from Venice and the world, will release his second feature film. It is titled "We are. .

Inspired by the tomb of the "Mujikunin" on Sado Island, this is a work that fully expresses director Tomina's fantastical and bizarre style.

A woman (Nana Komatsu) who can neither remember her name nor her past wakes up. The film takes place on Sado Island. Kii (Shinobu Otake), a cleaner at a mine, finds her collapsed in the facility and takes her home. The woman is named Midori by the girls living with Kii. Kii gets permission from the director (Tanaka), and Midori also gets a cleaning job. Midori is guided by the presence of a cat and meets Ao (Ryuhei Matsuda), a man who lives on the premises. He, too, has no memory of his past. As they speak more and more, they begin to meet at the temple gate and spend time together, as if guided by something. One day, Midori encounters Murasaki (Shizuka Ishibashi), who exudes intimacy with Ao, and is disturbed. 

Starring Nana Komatsu and Ryuhei Matsuda. Their restrained performances lead the audience into the mysterious world of the divine tax, set in the former site of a gold mine on Sado Island.

The supporting cast includes Shinobu Otake, Shizuka Ishibashi, Min Tanaka, and Yayako Uchida.

In addition, we have also brought together such gems of expression as Kabuki world hope Chinnosuke Kataoka, dancer/director Kaiji Moriyama, and Noh actor Manjiro Tatsumi. The screen reflects what only their physical expression can say, not words.

The music for the film was composed by Yojiro Noda, the frontman of "RADWIMPS". How did he use music to solve the theme of a story about a wandering "soul"?

This film was the only Japanese film selected out of the nine films in the International Competition of the Biennale College Cinema 2018-2019, a project of the Venice International Film Festival to support up-and-coming filmmakers. It is also an official selection for the Competition section of the 36th Tokyo International Film Festival.
