Books under Hotchkiss is a gallery and bookstore located near the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa . Since its opening in May of this year, this ambitious and conceptual store has featured a certain artist every few months, and has tried to decipher the artist by displaying his or her work in the gallery on the second floor and a number of books related to the artist in the bookstore on the first floor.
The artist chosen for this year's event is the late Mizumaru Anzai, who sadly passed away in 2014. Mizumaru Anzai, who continued to be active as an illustrator, also worked on many book bindings. He was loved by many novelists and authors, including Haruki Murakami, and had an outstanding mindset not only as an illustrator but also as a designer.
. We will collect more than 200 of Mr. Mizumaru's binding works and read his philosophy from a design point of view. In addition, many of his favorite items such as snow globes, original paintings, and silk screens will be on display, and a book with the same title will also be published.
Mizumaru's illustrations are gentle, clean, and somewhat pop-like. While the works themselves are beautiful to look at, the exhibition also offers a chance to see Mizumaru as a designer, making it a must-see for fans of the artist. Of course, a large number of works is not necessarily a good thing, but there are philosophies that emerge only when a large number of works are collected. We hope you will take the opportunity to view this impressive display of over 200 books in one place.
